Role of Teachers
Teachers have a considerable amount of influence on the lives of their students. For most, they are role models and a source of information; for others, they can assume the role of a parent or mentor. It is therefore, absolutely imperative that we understand the impact we have on these children and as teachers must morally and professionally lead by example.
I feel my job is not only to educate the students with regards to the curriculum but to assume a far larger role. I must prepare students with the social, educational, and formational skills required to succeed in life after high school. We must lead by example and demonstrate to students how to act accordingly in social settings, teach students the critical thinking skills to work effectively in a wide range of employment positions, and to assure students have understood and learned the necessary material to succeed in the next stage of their lives.
Extra-Curricular Activities
It is important to me to take part in extra-curricular activities. These programs can be extremely valuable to students for building self-esteem, developing athletic and problem solving skills, teamwork and sportsmanship. Without the participation of teachers, these programs would not exist. Social activities are important in developing interpersonal skills among students. Someone once told me, and I constantly remind myself, “Anything that gets a kid to come to school is a good thing.”
Assessment and Evaluation
Assessment and Evaluation should be a tool geared towards helping students. I believe that by giving students the option to choose topics within the specific guidelines should be employed to motivate students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. I will lead by providing timely and descriptive feedback for students to revise their work and identify where and how improvements need to be made and use their professional judgment to ensure that the students level of achievement reflects their most consistent and recent work.
